| English Sparkling, still and rose |
I visited Glynde Food and English Wine Festival for the first time this weekend. Set in the beautiful and historic grounds of Glynde Place - a 16th century country house in the heart of the South Downs - the festival offers the biggest English wine gathering in the country, and has become a key platform for the English wine industry to showcase their best wines to consumers from across the UK and particularly the South-East.
English wine masterclasses were held on both days which headed up by Stephen Skelton MW and wine judge Joe Wadsack. The tasting sessions allowed participants to taste five wines including English sparkling, white and rose.
The best part of the masterclass was where we served two wines blind, one Champagne and one English Sparkling and asked the audience to see if they could discern one from the other. Participants were surprised at the high quality and I was personally enlightened to see such great examples being produced right here in England.
Starting with just one small tent the festival has grown quickly and next year will no doubt be a key focus for the English Wine industry with the 2012 Olympics taking place around the same time.
