Dawn
For some odd reason I woke up at 5am on Saturday. Perhaps it was my body telling me to make the most of the stunning weather which has graced the UK for the last few days. Rather than trying to shut out the light and catch some more sleep I decided instead to take the bike out for a spin and see what was happening in East London at this witching hour.
First stop was Hackney Wick, where the
Hackney WickED festival was still taking place from the night before. The streets were strewn with bottles and revelers from the night previous, wandering around in a dazed trying to escape by any means possible.
Continuing down and alongside the Olympic Park, I stopped to catch a glimpse of the Stadium and the half finished
Anish Kapoor Orbit which is slowly but determindly rising above the rest of east London.
After circling around the neglected streets of Newham and Tower Hamlets (and through the fortress that is Canary Wharf), I was back at London Fields where those whose days were both finishing and starting came together in a slightly awkward way.
Dusk
The evening was all about an impromptu BBQ in Clapton. Hailing from Hackney Central we were naturally treated with suspicion and classed as outsiders. However our obliging hosts served up an amazing feast which involved a fair amount of Halloumi and more inspiration from Mr Ottolenghi.
