Climpson and Sons can only be described as a pioneer in the London Coffee Scene. One of the oldest and most well known coffee shops in East London, it opened on Broadway Market in the late-2000's.
Back then many had not heard the terms 'extraction', 'single origin' and 'flat white' used when describing coffee, now common parlance. The coffee shop has also played a pivotal role in training and preparing barista's for a future in the industry. Many a barista found throughout the London coffee scene has done time behind the machines here.
As the evolution of the coffee scene has gathered pace, many more places have popped up over the last few years. New roasteries have come up around the east, and there's a set of new coffee entrepreneurs out there ready to serve the ever-increasing market for quality coffee.
It was somewhat refreshing then to hear during a recent visit that the original Climpsons had undergone something of a small refurb - ushering in a wider selection of blends and installing a new machine - all to keep pace with an increasingly knowledgeable and demanding customer base.
In the roastery just around the corner, the processing of beans continues at apace. Special 'seasonal blends' are now released quarterly and unique roasts such as 'The Baron', a combination of Peruvian and Brazillian beans sit alongside Ethiopian Harrar, an earthy roast enjoyed when processed as filter.
As ever, the coffee shop remains the face of the business and an appropriate location to showcase the hard work that goes into the roasting process.
